I've been thinking about this for a while, and have decided to make a big change. I have started a new blog over at Wordpress. I hope that you check it out and I hope that you enjoy it.

I have loved doing My Cottage Garden and really appreciate all the support of the wonderful bloggers (and others) who have supported me by reading it and leaving comments.

I really started My Cottage Garden to show the progress of my gardens from the beginning. The gardens are all as big as I can make them, and so from now on I feel I wouldn't have as much new things to show you.

So, that brings me to my new blog. It's going to be mainly a blog of photographs. I will still show lots of photographs of my gardens and flowers, but there will be photos of many other things as well. I really enjoy photography and want to be able to show more subjects than 'just' my gardens.

The new blog is called Diane Pamela Photography.

I'm finding it a bit more user-friendly and the page is simpler to navigate as well. I've been slowly transferring your blogs to my blogroll over there (now under a page called 'Garden Blogs I Love', If you don't see your blog on there yet, it will be there in the next few days. (That part isn't quite as user-friendly).

So again, thank you all for your support over the years, and I really hope you will check out and enjoy my new blog.

I've been absent for the last while, because I've been really busy getting ready for my town's Open Garden Weekend that happened this weekend. It's a fundraiser for our local horticultural society and ten gardens, including mine, were featured this year.

We felt honoured to be a part of it. Our weather has been so-so up until now and this weekend the weather person decided to give us our first taste of high temperatures and high humidity. The gardeners still came out and it was lovely talking to them and showing them around.

The garden wasn't in full bloom (that comes in August) but the delphiniums and sweet williams were showing off this weekend as well as some of the rudbekia, lychnis and evening primroses. Some of the peonies were just holding on long enough for people to see what they looked like.

I'm posting a lot more photos in this post than I usually do, but it's the easiest way for me to share the day with my family and friends out of town. I hope you enjoy.
Thanksto the suggestion of my friend, Jennifer, at Three Dogs in a Garden, I have painted the chairs turquoise! I just love it.

So, I think I have added all the whimsy that I am going to, at least for now.

This tree is actually not alive anymore. It was a fine old black spruce that passed away of old age a few years ago. We took the upper part of the tree down, but left enough to use as a clothesline. We haven't actually added the clothesline yet, but it makes a great place to display a little group of fake birdhouses. Some of of the birdhouses were found at the dollar store and others at second-hand shops and repainted. One used to be a little clock (the one at the top), others key holders, and some were just decorative.

This is a wicker trunk that I found at a garage sale in May. I found the idea for making it into a planter on Pinterest. The plants inside the trunk are propped up on items to make them all about even at the top. I have some shade annuals like vinca vine and coleus in there, plus some hostas.

I really like the way it turned out and it's under the trees in the front yard, facing the house, so I can see it when I look out the window.

I added two baskets to the bike. I was all thumbs trying to attach them to the bike, but my husband did a very good job of it. He just used wire and secured them to the places that you would actually attach real baskets.

The baskets have German ivy and begonias.

I got this little toddler-sized chair, and other other like it, at another garage sale. I thought it might make a nice little item to put planters on and move to where I need the colour in the perennial bed. I like that the chairs are worn and the paint is peeling off, but I don't like the colour very much and I don't have a lot of red in my garden.

If I painted these chairs, what colour do you think I should paint them?

I really want one of those gardens that have lovely little whimsical features. And I have never had much luck with it. I'm trying to go for the 'charming' look, but have never been good at the idea part.

My niece introduced me to the website Pinterest, and there I have found many wonderful ideas. Here's what I have so far. Some are still works in progress.

Traditionally, in Zone 4, many of us like to say we can plant out our annuals on the 24th of May weekend. Every year we seem to get caught up in the excitement of beautiful weather in early May, garden centres opening and hopes that the weather will stay.

He he. Mother Nature usually has her own plans. We had a pretty good frost just three nights ago, but the long-term forecast is looking good. My friend, Paula, and I went to a couple of garden centres yesterday and enjoyed looking at the choices of plants. We each came home with a couple of flats.

I will start planting up some hanging baskets in the next few days, but I am going to wait until next week to plant some annuals in the ground. Just. In. Case.

This year I was really attracted to some bright colours of 'Million Bells' - there were many to chose from, but I picked orange, bright pink and purple! To my eye, they look really fun together. I chose some lime coloured potato vine and some vinca vine to go in with them. I'm never really sure what the hanging baskets will look like or how many plants to put in, so I will be 'trial by error'. Here's what they look at what some of them look like together in the flats;

Calibrachoa "million bells', potato vine, and some Thunbergia alata 'lack-eyed Susan vine

I also couldn't resist a couple of new hostas: the tiny 8-inch high bi-coloured 'Mighty Mouse' and a larger one with too much cream in it to resist called 'Paul Revere.'

Is it just me, or are hostas getting really expensive to purchase at garden centres?

In the backyard, we have made a fairly big change this year. We used to have an above ground pool, which we never really wanted, but it came with the house. We had our fun with it, but my husband always said that when a too-expensive repair came along, he would really rather have a fire pit.

So....last winter, the pool liner didn't make the winter, and we just decided to take the pool down.

My husband worked away at the project last summer, and this spring we hired our local contractor to finish it off.

We are so happy with it. I'm very happy they were able to get it done so early in the season for us, as I have quite a bit of work to do now, to made the flower border go 'all the way around' the circle, as opposed to how far around it goes now (so the back of the pool didn't have a border because you couldn't really see it anyway).

Here are a couple of shots about how this project is coming along. Nothing left but a little planting, re-grassing and gathering some firewood!

A new gardening season has begun and everything gardeners have dreamed and schemed about during the long winter months is starting to happen.

Here in my zone four garden, things have gotten off to a bit of a late start. The cooler weather just seemed to want to hang on a little longer. I usually have crocuses blooming on my Dad's birthday, in mid-April, and this year there was just the slightest bit of yellow poking through the bud.

first hint of spring - the 'Golden Yellow' crocus

It's going to be an exciting year in my garden. It is going to be featured in my local horticultural society's fundraiser - an open garden weekend. I'm very excited about it. The weekend is in mid-July, which is traditionally one of the 'greenest' times for my garden. This year I have plans to use a lot more annuals than I usually do. I actually don't really plant much of anything in the way of annuals, except a few in hanging baskets and containers.

This year I have started some dahlias, which I intend to put in pots, and spread the pots throughout the back border, to add colour where it's needed. I've also planted double annual poppy seeds throughout the long side border.

I'm really hoping that the delphiniums will be in full glory during the open garden weekend. I very carefully kept a little blood meal around the tender shoots, warding off the rabbits, and am hoping now that they 'danger' period of them becoming breakfast is over. (The rabbits now seem content to eat the clover in the grass.)

I also have a few projects in mind, to add some whimsical features to the beds. I'll add a post about that in the coming weeks.

Until then, here's what has been going on so far:

I'm doing my first 'Mosaic Monday' post, joining Judith at her lovely Ontario garden blog,
Lavender Cottage.

My mosaic is photos of different colours of my cherished Perennial Phlox. The reasons I love growing them is that my dear friend, Rita, gave me most of them, they are very long blooming and bloom late in the season.

AND they provide the big drifts of colour that I so dearly love.

Have a great week everyone and happy gardening.

Usually the 'full glory' time would be a little earlier than now, but maybe only a week or two. The most colourful time in my garden has always been the late summer. That's when the perennial phlox come out, the rudbeckia and coneflowers are still out and a few daylilies are hanging on.

Here are some pictures taken over the last few days.

The grand entrances by my beloved perennials continue to be about two weeks behind schedule. Usually by this time of year the back border is a riot of colourful perennial phlox. This only means that we still have many things to look forward to here in Zone 4 of Ontario.

We've had two days of a really good rain here and so the photos in today's post are a bit drippy. I also can't guarantee that were are no water spots from the lens.

Lots of rudbeckia, which I love. Even though I've tried to read about them, I still don't know the difference between the ones with the smooth leaves and the ones with the hairy leaves. I know the ones with the smooth leaves are called 'Goldsturm' though. If anyone can enlighten me, I'd appreciate it!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful middle-of-August week!

I love this time of year, when all the dayliles are in bloom. I look forward to the early mornings, when I can tour my flower beds and snip off the spent flowers from the day before. It's so lovely knowing more will be blooming as soon as the sun is on them for a bit.

I have two new varieties this year, which I've been looking forward to posting shots of.

Both came to my garden from dear friends. The first is one that I bought at a garden centre a few years ago and gave to my mentor, Rita. Last fall, she gave me a division of it for my own garden. It's my only double daylily and it's a lovely peach colour.

Rita's double peach daylily, with coral bells, Heuchera 'Bressingham Hybrids' behind

The second new one is a two toned orange and yellow one, given to me by my great friend, Paula. This is a really different one, because there are actually two different colours, but every second petal is actually the different colour!

beautiful bi-coloured daylily, from Paula's Garden

The rest of the daylilies are also all blooming now, with the exception of 'Stella d'oro' which is my early bloomer and is finished now. (Hopefully some more blooms will appear later in the season though.)
Hope everyone is enjoying their gardens. We're having a little bit of cool weather here. Hopefully that will mean that the flowers will last a little longer!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've long pondered over and searched for some kind of tote/bag/thing that I could use for gardening. Something that I could carry around with me on my sojourns into the garden, something that I could carry a few necessities in, something that would save me leaving scissors, pruners, and weeding tools all over the place and not being able to find them when I want them!

I purchased one such 'tote bag' a few years ago that was specifically designed for this, but the pockets weren't nearly deep enough and the whole bag was very light and collapsed onto itself much too easily. I looked at anther one this spring that is like a little apron that you put over the sides of a standard sized bucket (and especially made for gardening), but it seemed kind of cheap and shabby when I looked at in the store.

When I mentioned what I was looking for to my husband he said they sell a thing like that in the automotive section, something that's meant for tools but goes on a bucket. So I checked it out. I always carry my little bucket around with me - I'm sure you all do - to put weeds and deadheaded flowers in.

I bought it and it works absolutely perfectly for me! This is what I bought and how I use it:

The last couple of photos are of a little project my husband, Dave, has on the go right now. I'll post more on it later, but we are turning the area that had an above-ground pool on it into something else. Kind of 're-purposing' the area after we took out the pool last spring. Dave put nice brick around it (or what we call 'Man Size Lego). We filled in with gravel, leveled it off, and tamped it down. Next we are going to put limestone on it, similar to what's in the limestone walkway, and have a firepit in the middle of it! Dave is also going to put in an arbour with a little path down to what he calls the 'Serenity Deck' (I love the name) which is a little deck partway down the bank of the creek that runs behind us. It's going to be a lovely place to sit and listen to the birds.

I hope you enjoy the tour!

My camera was out of commission for a short while so here's a quick catch up of what's been going on.

The peonies are almost finished, but they were glorious! The delphiniums are starting to come out. It's very exciting because I transplanted some from my friend, Rita's, garden in the fall and I'm not sure what colours they are going to be. Rita has a rainbow of delphinium colours. The daylilies are also coming along.
I have no idea of the varieties, as they were all gifts from my dear friend, Rita. The purple and white one, that is shown second from the top, was given to Rita by the woman who got her iris collection started over forty-five years ago.

It's a nice, but overcast day today, so great for taking photographs. The Cottage Garden is in that in-between state of being mostly 'green' right now. It reminds me of a great gardening quote, 'if you're going to grow perennials, you'd better learn to like green' - lucky for me, I do!

I do have a few colourful things blooming now and the irises are just about ready to burst open into beautiful colour all over the garden.

A few pictures from this morning:

I really admire gardens that have little whimsical features, but I'm never sure if my garden has the type of personality that can pull whimsy off.

Do you know what I mean by that? Don't feel bad if you don't, because I really don't either. I saw some great Gargoyles at a garden centre yesterday though, and it was love at first sight. I thought one of them would be just the perfect blend of whimsy and charm for me. At second sight, I looked at the price tag of $90 and I decided it could wait till the end-of-season-everything-must-go-sale.

However, I did find this adorable tabby cat plant hanger at the local hardware store last year, forgot about it, remembered it, and my husband put it up yesterday. It looks wonderful on the post by our front door! (Look one inch to your right and you'll see why tabbies are special to me.)

tabby cats and flowers, these are a few of my favourite things

I had fun looking around at the different annuals, and choose four little things for a basket to hang on the new hanger. I don't know a lot about annuals, as my garden is 99.99 percent perennials, so I hope I made good choices. I do like the pastel shades and I bought one of each, so I hope that will be the right amount for a 14" hanging pot.

Almost the end of May! It's hard to believe. The temperatures have been so nice for the last week that everything is coming along very nicely indeed.

It's also Fertilizer Friday, so I'm linking up with Glenda at Tootsie Time to show what's blooming at my place today.

I'm finished the 'work' (I find it hard to call gardening work because I find it so relaxing and enjoyable) of filling in spaces here and there with perennial divisions. I've put on some fish mulch for fertilizer around the perennials and put on an extra layer of cedar mulch to help keep the weeds down.

I don't have a lot of new things in bloom today - the tulips and daffodils from my last last post are still going strong and the lilies of the valley are ready to burst into bloom in the days to come.

I just have a couple of new things to show this week:
Spring colour has arrived!

I think it's all the more special because we had to wait just that much longer for it this year. The temperatures have also risen dramatically in the last few days and I'm going to guess that a lot of things are going to just grow like crazy.

What's blooming this morning includes the muscari (grape hyacinths) in the foreground. I just love these little upward standing flowers and their addition of the wonderful blue contrast to anything else that is blooming. Behind them are my full-size daffodils and the little 'tete-a-tete' ones, which are just starting to fade. Also back there are two clusters of tulips I planted last fall. The red ones are called patriotically named 'Canadian Liberator' and the pink ones are adorably called 'Sugar Love'.

I made a concerted effort, last fall, to plant bulbs where their foliage would be hidden behind other plants after their blooming period. Not sure how successful I was, but we'll see later.
The one at the back, the one I call my back border, is my pride and joy. It looks like this in July.

back border with phlox, rudbeckia, perennial lobelia in bloom

It started small in 2008 and got bigger every year. The only 'planning' principle I used here was to try to put the tall things at the back and the short things at the front. Somehow it all worked out - all the plants worked together, always some things in bloom and it all looked wonderful together.

My side border is a different story. It didn't start out small at all. In fact, we had landscapers put it in (well, put the soil in) when they rebuilt our retaining wall in 2011. When I planted the side border, I think I thought too much about it. I tried to put in different plants - different than the ones that were so successful in the back border and somehow I was never really happy with it. Half the border would look nice and the other half would look empty.

side border looking a bit crowded with green

Yesterday, I just decided to go with my instincts and look objectively at the side border, thinking about where things were, what worked, what didn't work and why. Then I 'went to town' rearranging things. I pulled a few things out and moved other things around. I divided things from the back border and moved them to the side border. And I had fun doing it.

Both gardens won't have exactly the same perennials in them, but the ones that do really well for me (perennial phlox, rudbeckia, and daylilies). It probably isn't a bad idea to have some continuity between the two beds anyway.

I'm curious to know what other gardeners do for 'planning'. Go with gut instincts, plan from good books for their zones, or trial and error?

The great thing about flower gardening, is if things don't work, we can always move them to where they look or work better.

And a quick look at what's blooming now:
Things are coming along!

As you can see, I changed my blog layout. I had a hard time getting everything to fit (either the sidebar was overtop of the main text - like seeing double - or the sidebar was completely hidden). Finally figured it out, so it's all good now.

I'm told that people find it easier to read dark writing on light backgrounds, which is the opposite of my last layout. If anyone finds it difficult to read, please let me know and I'll tweak it!

Happy gardening and have a wonderful weekend, everyone.
Spring has finally sprung. We're still having really unusual cool temperatures here in my northeastern Ontario Zone 4.

I sprinkled a bit of blood meal around the tender shoots of my spring bulbs this year and it seems to have done the trick in terms of preventing them from becoming breakfast for some of the sweet things pictured below:
