Favourite Hostas

July 19, 2011

I love hostas! I have a fair bit of shade here, so I have about twenty different varieties. One was here when we bought the property (the 'Gold Standard') but most of the rest of them were purchased, either at garden centres or from a school fundraiser. Sadly, I don't know the names of the fund-raiser ones.

These are my favourite four. I think they are my favourites, because they all are always very healthy looking and not bothered by slugs.

'Blue Mouse Ears'
'First Frost'
'Gold Standard'
'June'

  2. What beautiful Hostas. I like Hostas too! Some of the ones that I have are really big and need to be divided, I think I will be working on that this fall! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Beautiful collection! I love white/green variegated hostas, I think the leaves are gorgeous. Isn't the little blue one sweet? I planted one a few years ago. The slugs really like mine, I have to keep them at bay...

  4. I love hostas too. My oldest was a gift from an old friend...I take it to every yard I have...it is currently 8 feet across...and I love it!

  5. Hi again Diane. Thought I'd answer you here. I have Double Knockout Roses and they are a rose anyone can grow. No spraying and all that and can just keep on going no matter what. I had them where they were really going to get to big though and moved them. As for my Gladiolas, they came up with a hardy type for here. If they hadn't than I wouldn't be growing them. Have a nice day!

  6. Love your hostas. I'm afraid my garden is too 'sluggy' and they don't last five minutes without being eaten to death. But your pics make me want to try again.

  7. Lovely, I like the colour and texture of hostas too and used to have a lot but in the end the slugs won the day.

  10. I have hostas in both my gardens, and June is a favorite of mine, too. For a while, I was besotted with the Hosta tokudama varieties that have puckered seersucker leaves (like Big Daddy and Love Pat) but they have turned out to be magnets for all the pine needles that rain down from the sky here with every gust of wind; so I am now avoiding those heavily textured leaves. -Jean

  11. Love those, as well as Sum and Substance, Patriot, and Sugae (spelling?). I don't have First Frost - may have to look in to that one.

    Yours all look very healthy!

I had to start 'moderating' the comments because I was getting so much spam, so if you notice your comment doesn't show up right away, that is why.
